Community Mourns South Carolina Fitness Trainer After Body Found Matching Her Description
A South Carolina community is grappling with grief and unanswered questions after authorities discovered a body believed to match the description of 39-year-old fitness trainer Elena Katherine Moore, who had been reported missing earlier this month. Weeks before her disappearance, Moore confided in a close friend that she was “scared for her life,” raising urgent concerns about safety, accountability, and the protections available to women facing fear and uncertainty.
Moore was last seen on June 11 after leaving a Planet Fitness in Lexington, South Carolina. On Wednesday afternoon, investigators located a body in the area that police say matches the clothing description of the missing trainer. According to Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green, officers were led to a new search location following a tip. Around 2:48 p.m., they discovered an unidentified body wearing clothing consistent with what Moore had on the night she disappeared — described as a green outfit visible in security footage taken before she went missing.
“She Was Scared for Her Life”
For those who knew Moore best, the news is devastating but tragically layered with troubling warning signs. Sondra Campbell, one of Moore’s closest friends of more than a decade, said their last in-person interaction on May 31 felt markedly different.
“She was scared for her life. She actually said those words to me,” Campbell recalled.
Campbell described Moore as someone she shared everything with — a loyal, deeply trusted friend. When asked what was wrong, Moore indicated she couldn’t speak openly at that moment.
“I can’t talk right now. There are too many people around. We need to talk one-on-one,” she told me.
That private conversation never happened. Campbell said she later missed a call from Moore on June 4. When she tried calling and texting back, there was no response. Soon after, Moore vanished.
Out of Character and Unanswered Questions
Friends say several aspects of Moore’s disappearance don’t add up. Campbell emphasized that Moore would not typically walk alone at night, underscoring how unusual it was that she was last spotted alone in a parking lot on the night she disappeared.
Security footage captured Moore walking through the Publix parking lot at 100 Old Cherokee Road in Lexington on June 11. After that, there were no confirmed sightings.
Adding to the growing unease, Moore’s social media accounts — normally active and regularly updated — had gone silent for about a month prior to her disappearance. Another friend, Lauren Beasley, described that absence as deeply uncharacteristic.
For loved ones, these details paint a troubling picture of someone who may have been living with fear in the weeks before she vanished.
