Caregiver Gunned Down After Chemo Visit, Community Demands Justice and Safety

A Caregiver’s Final Act of Love Ends in Tragedy on Houston Street

Marietta Allison made the drive from Austin to Houston for one reason: to stand beside her best friend as she endured the brutal reality of stage 4 ovarian cancer. Instead of returning home, Allison’s life was cut short in an act of violence that has left a grieving community demanding answers and justice.

On Saturday, March 7, Allison accompanied her friend Cassie Daniel to her second round of chemotherapy. After a long day at the hospital, where Allison stayed by Daniel’s side offering comfort and hands-on care, the two left around 10:30 p.m. to spend the night at a friend’s apartment.

With no available parking at the building, Allison dropped Daniel and her father off and circled the block to find a space. Moments later, Daniel heard something that would change her life forever.

“We were putting our things away, and I heard a scream and then a gunshot,” Daniel recalled. “I thought, ‘Was that a gunshot?’”

When Allison didn’t return and didn’t answer her phone, fear set in. Using her phone’s last known location, Daniel searched outside and found her friend lying on the sidewalk, surrounded by emergency responders. Her purse and wallet remained at the scene.

Authorities say Allison had been shot in what investigators believe was a carjacking. The vehicle she had been driving was gone.

Allison was rushed to a nearby hospital but died from her injuries. According to Daniel, the gunshot wound was devastating and likely killed her almost instantly.

Police soon located the stolen vehicle allegedly being driven by 18-year-old Darius DeWayne Hall. Officers initiated a high-speed pursuit that ended in a crash along the Southwest Freeway. Hall then allegedly fled on foot, leading to an hours-long standoff in a residential neighborhood before he was taken into custody around 7 a.m.

A neighbor described opening his door in the early morning to see officers in tactical gear aiming toward a nearby apartment unit where the suspect was ultimately found. Hall has since been charged with capital murder in connection with Allison’s death.

A Life Defined by Compassion

While the criminal charges move forward, those who loved Marietta Allison are focused on remembering the extraordinary compassion that defined her life. In her final hours, she wasn’t thinking about herself — she was caring for a friend battling cancer.

“She was literally sitting in the hospital bed, spoon-feeding me a fruit bowl,” Daniel said. “And I remember thinking, ‘Love like this exists.’”

Daniel described witnessing Allison’s “tender care, compassion, empathy and just the love that was there,” unaware that those would be their final shared moments.

Allison’s death is not just another headline in a cycle of violence. It is a stark reminder of how fragile our lives can be — and how urgently our communities need meaningful investments in safety, prevention, and the conditions that allow everyone to thrive without fear. No one dropping a friend off after chemotherapy should face lethal violence on a neighborhood street.

As the legal process unfolds, a family mourns, a friend continues her fight against cancer without her closest companion, and a community grapples with yet another preventable loss. Marietta Allison showed up when it mattered most. She offered care in a moment of profound vulnerability. That is how she should be remembered — not solely as a victim of violence, but as a woman whose final act was one of fierce and selfless love.
