Oregon Community Reeling After Deadly Domestic Violence Shooting Leaves Multiple Victims and Injured Officer
A quiet neighborhood in Sandy, Oregon — about 30 miles east of Portland — was shattered Sunday afternoon when a domestic disturbance escalated into deadly gunfire, leaving multiple people dead and a police officer seriously wounded.
According to authorities, officers from the Sandy Police Department and the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a domestic dispute and shooting just before 4 p.m. on the 39000 block of Evans Street. What they encountered underscores the devastating, all-too-familiar toll of gun violence in American communities.
As law enforcement arrived on the scene, shots were fired. Officers returned fire, and one officer was struck several times during the exchange. The injured officer was airlifted to a nearby hospital and is now in stable condition. Police officials say the officer is expected to survive.
“The officer is in stable condition, and I’m extremely thankful that I can tell you they are expected to survive,” Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey said during a press conference Sunday evening. At the same time, he confirmed a far grimmer reality: multiple people were found dead at the residence.
Authorities have not yet disclosed how many individuals lost their lives or detailed the circumstances of their deaths. The investigation is being treated as a homicide case.
Hours-Long Standoff, Shelter-in-Place Order
Following the initial exchange of gunfire, the suspected shooter barricaded inside the home, triggering a large-scale law enforcement response from several agencies. Residents in the surrounding area were instructed to shelter in place as heavily armed officers worked to contain the situation and prevent further harm.
After several tense hours, the suspect surrendered shortly before 8 p.m. and was taken into custody without injury. Authorities later lifted the shelter-in-place order, assuring the public there was no continued threat to the community.
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it is assisting with the homicide investigation and pledged full support to the Sandy Police Department as the community begins grappling with the aftermath.
“Our thoughts are with the recovering officer, the homicide victims, their families, and the entire Sandy community,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, also acknowledging the first responders who faced significant danger.

Sandy Mayor Kathleen Walker described the violence as an “unimaginable loss of lives,” noting that the trauma extends well beyond the immediate scene.
“This tragedy reaches beyond the neighborhood where it happened,” Walker said. “It reaches the families and friends of the victims, and the neighbors who witnessed the shootings and aftermath.”
She also expressed gratitude for the officers who responded, including the wounded officer whose recovery now represents a small measure of relief amid profound grief.
