Joy Turns to Devastation: Georgia Newlyweds’ Wedding Night Ends in Tragic Helicopter Crash
What should have been the beginning of a joyful new chapter became a nightmare in northern Georgia on Friday night, when a helicopter carrying a newly married couple crashed into a wooded area, killing the groom and the pilot and leaving the bride seriously injured.
Dave Fiji, a first officer for Endeavor Air, and his wife Jesni Fiji had just celebrated their wedding alongside roughly 400 loved ones at The Revere in Dawsonville. The couple planned a dramatic sendoff by helicopter to DeKalb-Peachtree Airport before heading to an Atlanta-area hotel. Instead, the Robinson R66 aircraft went down in a 10,000-acre wildlife management area owned by the City of Atlanta and managed by the state.
Jesni Fiji survived the crash but was unconscious through the night. When she regained awareness Saturday morning, she found herself pinned beneath her husband’s lifeless body. According to Dave Fiji’s father, George Fiji, she was trapped for nearly six hours before help arrived.
“She woke up and saw Dave resting on her chest,” George Fiji recounted. “There was blood. His body was cold. She’s a nurse — she knew he was gone.”
Despite the horrific circumstances, Jesni reportedly suffered only cuts and bruises and no broken bones. She is recovering in a metro Atlanta hospital, grappling with a trauma no one should have to endure — especially on what was meant to be the happiest day of her life.
Questions Surround the Crash
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash and has not yet determined what caused the helicopter to go down. The search reportedly took time, as responders worked to locate the aircraft deep in the wooded terrain.
Weather conditions appear to have been a concern. Rain and low visibility were reported in the area that evening. According to George Fiji, Jesni relayed that her husband — himself a trained pilot — expressed alarm about the conditions before takeoff.
“Dave told the pilot that when there’s zero visibility, we never fly,” his father said. “That’s what she remembers.”

In a statement to employees, Endeavor Air expressed profound sorrow over his death, noting how deeply the loss is felt among coworkers and friends.
Family members say Dave and Jesni met through church connections between South Carolina and Georgia and built their relationship on friendship and faith. Their wedding was a celebration of community, love, and shared hope for the future.
“My son was so happy,” George Fiji said, recalling watching Dave stand at the altar just hours before the crash. “He looked so handsome. I was just admiring him.”
