A Wisconsin Family Shattered as Mental Health Crisis Ends in Tragedy
A devastating tragedy in Rock County, Wisconsin has left a community grieving and searching for answers after a 14-year-old girl was allegedly killed by her own mother, who later told authorities she believed she was "protecting" her child.
According to a criminal complaint, Tyiece Oninski of the Town of Turtle called law enforcement on March 20 and confessed to fatally stabbing her daughter, Kuren Rein, the previous night. During the 13-minute call, Oninski reportedly claimed she ended her daughter’s life to protect her from billionaire tech executive Elon Musk. Authorities have not indicated any evidence that Musk had contact with or posed a threat to the family.
When a dispatcher asked whether she needed emergency medical assistance, Oninski allegedly responded that her daughter did not need an ambulance.
“She’s dead, honey. She needs a hearse,” she reportedly said.
Officers arrived at the home and found the teenager suffering from multiple stab wounds. A knife and sheath were discovered nearby. Authorities also reported finding a partial barefoot impression inside the house; investigators later noted that Oninski’s left foot appeared to have blood on it.
According to the complaint, Oninski had cuts on her neck and wrists consistent with an attempted suicide. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where toxicology tests allegedly showed the presence of benzodiazepines, amphetamines, and THC in her blood.
At one point while receiving medical care, Oninski asked a deputy whether her name was in the news and appeared disappointed when told it was not, according to authorities.

As of Tuesday night, the campaign had raised more than $17,000 to help cover funeral costs and provide some stability during an overwhelming period of grief.
“We are coming together to support a young man who has just lost his sister in a devastating and unthinkable way,” the fundraiser states. “No one should have to face something like this, especially at such a young age.”
Organizers emphasized that Kuren was deeply loved and that her life deserves to be honored with dignity and care. In moments like this, community solidarity becomes a lifeline — a reminder that even amid profound sorrow, people can come together to uphold compassion and collective responsibility.
As the legal process moves forward, the focus remains on remembering Kuren Rein, a young teenager whose future was cut short. Her life mattered.
