Handcuffed Man Allegedly Steals Dallas Patrol Car, Exposing Safety Failures

Dallas Traffic Stop Erupts Into Dangerous Police Chase After Handcuffed Man Allegedly Takes Patrol Car

What began as a routine traffic stop in Dallas quickly escalated into a chaotic and deeply alarming scene, raising urgent questions about public safety, police procedures, and accountability.

According to authorities, the incident unfolded around 5:35 p.m. on May 30 in the 2300 block of South Marsalis Avenue. Two officers stopped a vehicle and arrested 37-year-old Stacey Huffman. Police say Huffman was handcuffed and placed in the back seat of a patrol cruiser following the stop.

Recently released body camera and dash camera footage shows the tense moments that followed. Video from inside the squad car appears to show Huffman maneuvering his left hand free from the handcuffs and concealing his hands behind his back, undetected.

As officers began transporting him to jail, police allege that Huffman attempted to open the locked rear door and removed his seatbelt while the vehicle was in motion. Around 6:10 p.m., on Interstate 35, officers stopped the cruiser in order to further secure him.

What happened next rapidly spiraled into a life-threatening episode.

Authorities say that after the officers exited the vehicle, Huffman climbed into the driver’s seat and sped away in the patrol car. One officer managed to get into the back seat just before the cruiser accelerated. In the chaotic seconds that followed, the officer deployed a Taser, but police report that it was ineffective after Huffman allegedly ripped the wires away.

Video captures the officer repeatedly shouting, “Stop the car!” as the cruiser swerved down the roadway. The footage reportedly shows the officer being thrown violently around the back seat as the car accelerated.

Police say the officer then drew his firearm and struck Huffman on the side of the head after the vehicle picked up speed. Authorities allege that Huffman opened the driver’s-side door while traveling approximately 50 miles per hour and jumped from the moving car.

The cruiser continued forward for roughly 1,000 feet during the ordeal, with Huffman reportedly in control of the vehicle for about 30 seconds. After Huffman leapt from the car, the officer lunged into the front seat and managed to regain control, preventing what could have been a catastrophic collision on a busy interstate.

Huffman was rendered unconscious and taken back into custody. Both he and the officer were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Authorities say Huffman is expected to face multiple charges, including driving with an invalid license, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and escape from custody.

Broader Questions About Safety and Accountability

While the situation ended without civilian casualties, the incident underscores the high stakes of policing on public roadways and the potential danger to everyone involved — from officers to bystanders. It also raises critical concerns about procedures for transporting detainees, the effectiveness of restraint practices, and the split-second decisions that can escalate an already volatile situation.

Moments like these remind communities why transparency and accountability are essential. The release of body camera and dash camera footage offers the public a clearer window into what occurred, but a full investigation remains underway.

As Dallas authorities continue reviewing the case, residents are left grappling with urgent questions: How did a handcuffed individual allegedly free himself inside a patrol car? Were proper safety measures followed? And what steps will be taken to ensure that similar incidents do not put more lives at risk?

In a city — and a nation — striving for safer streets and stronger community trust, the answers matter.
