Across the United States and around the world, Jewish communities are sounding the alarm over a troubling rise in antisemitic rhetoric and violence. From college campuses to political campaigns, recent events have underscored the urgent need for institutions, leaders, and everyday Americans to stand up for pluralism, safety, and democratic values.
Federal Lawsuit Alleges Violent Assault on Jewish Students at UCLA
A federal lawsuit filed on behalf of Jewish students at UCLA paints a harrowing picture of chaos and failure. According to the complaint, students were physically assaulted with sticks, pepper-sprayed, and knocked to the ground by an anti-Israel crowd during campus unrest. The suit further alleges that protesters established so-called “Jew-free zones,” blocking Jewish students from accessing parts of campus and even preventing them from attending classes.
The lawsuit accuses university officials of standing by while Jewish students faced intimidation and violence, arguing that administrators failed in their basic responsibility to keep all students safe. If substantiated, the allegations represent not only a grave civil rights violation but also a betrayal of the inclusive principles public universities are meant to uphold.
Institutions of higher learning must be spaces for debate, dissent, and organizing — but never for harassment or exclusion based on faith or identity. Defending Palestinian human rights and opposing antisemitism are not mutually exclusive aims. Both are essential to a genuinely just society.
Political Fallout Over Extremist Rhetoric
In Texas, Democratic candidate Maureen Galindo was defeated in a primary runoff after backlash erupted over her call to imprison “American Zionists.” Her remarks were sharply criticized across the political spectrum, including by prominent Democrats who described the rhetoric as disqualifying.
Voters ultimately chose a more moderate candidate, Johnny Garcia, signaling that even in deeply polarized times, there are red lines when it comes to targeting people based on political beliefs tied to cultural or religious identity. Holding leaders accountable for inflammatory or discriminatory language is a crucial part of protecting democratic norms.
Public Figures Confront Controversy
Elsewhere, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy forcefully rejected a proposal from a political operative connected to Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. The collaboration would have targeted Red Sox ownership, but Portnoy instead criticized the candidate’s reported Totenkopf tattoo and publicly condemned any association with extremist symbolism.
While political alliances are often transactional, moments like this illustrate a broader societal refusal to normalize imagery and ideologies tied to fascist violence. Consistent opposition to hate — regardless of party — is essential to preventing its mainstreaming.
Antisemitism Concerns Intensify in France
Internationally, tensions are also high. Israeli Ambassador to France Joshua Zarka has compared the rhetoric of French far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon to dangerous historical precedents, warning that divisive language targeting Israel can fuel hostility toward Jewish communities. France has reported a sharp increase in antisemitic incidents, raising fears among Jewish residents about their safety.
“The way Jean-Luc Mélenchon speaks in front of a crowd reminds me of Hitler,” Zarka said, pointing to a style of unifying supporters against a perceived singular enemy.
While such comparisons are deeply charged, the broader concern is clear: when public figures use sweeping, inflammatory language, the consequences can ripple beyond politics and into everyday life for vulnerable communities. Criticism of any government, including Israel’s, must not slide into scapegoating Jews collectively — a pattern with a long and devastating history.
Democracy Demands Vigilance
Antisemitism, like all forms of bigotry, thrives when institutions hesitate and leaders equivocate. Whether on college campuses, in campaign speeches, or in international debates, the line between political disagreement and discriminatory targeting must remain firmly drawn.
For progressives committed to equality and multiracial democracy, confronting antisemitism is not optional — it is foundational. Standing with Jewish communities against violence and exclusion strengthens the broader fight against racism, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and all systems of hate.
The path forward requires moral clarity: protect free speech, defend peaceful protest, and guarantee that no student, voter, or family is marginalized because of their faith or heritage. News for all Americans means justice and safety for all Americans — without exception.
