Pregnant Woman Shot in Apparent Road Rage Attack Sparks Outrage in St. Louis
A 19-year-old Illinois man is behind bars after authorities say he opened fire on a pregnant woman who was simply trying to make it home from a prenatal appointment — a shocking act of violence that underscores the escalating dangers of road rage and gun access in America.
Anthony Lee-Armstrong faces multiple felony charges, including first-degree assault, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, and first-degree property damage, in connection with the May 17 shooting in St. Louis. According to jail records, he is being held without bond.
Police say the terrifying chain of events began when a woman called 911, reporting that two black vehicles occupied by white men had just fired shots into her family’s car. Inside that vehicle was a young child — and the woman, who was 11 weeks pregnant.
A Routine Drive Turns Violent
Authorities say the family was driving near Russell Boulevard and South Jefferson Avenue when a Volkswagen sedan and a black Honda sedan nearly collided with them as all the vehicles entered a QuickTrip parking lot. After the close call, the male driver of the family’s car briefly followed the other vehicles to confront them about the near-accident, then left the lot.
What should have ended there instead spiraled into alleged, deliberate retaliation. Police say both sedans began aggressively tailing the family’s vehicle, weaving through traffic to keep up. When the family attempted a U-turn to get away, gunfire erupted.
The pregnant woman later told investigators she heard the shots and immediately felt a sharp pain in her back. When officers arrived at the scene, they found she had been struck by a bullet in her upper back. The male victim suffered shrapnel wounds to his chin and shoulder, and the family’s car showed significant ballistic damage.
Both adults were taken to a hospital for treatment. The condition of the unborn child has not been publicly detailed.
Allegations of Racist Remarks
According to a probable cause statement, the woman later identified Lee-Armstrong in a police lineup as the driver of the Volkswagen. She told investigators he made racist remarks toward her and the male victim during the incident — a disturbing allegation that adds another layer of gravity to an already horrifying case.
No family should have to fear for their lives — or the life of an unborn child — because of a traffic dispute fueled by hatred and easy access to deadly weapons.
Surveillance footage reportedly shows the two suspect vehicles following the family through the area, with gunfire allegedly coming from the driver’s side of the Volkswagen. Investigators linked Lee-Armstrong to the vehicle using license plate reader technology. A second witness inside the Honda sedan also identified him as the Volkswagen’s driver, police say.
A Broader Crisis of Gun Violence
This incident is yet another example of how everyday disagreements can escalate into life-threatening violence when firearms are involved. Across the country, road rage shootings have become disturbingly common, leaving families and communities traumatized.
- A pregnant woman wounded on her way home from medical care
- A child placed in immediate danger
- A dispute on the road turning into gunfire
Community advocates have long warned that the widespread availability of firearms, combined with rising tensions and minimal accountability, creates a volatile mix. Incidents like this raise urgent questions about public safety, racial hostility, and the role of responsible gun policies in protecting families.
Lee-Armstrong was taken into custody on May 23 and now faces two counts of first-degree assault, four counts of armed criminal action, one count of unlawful use of a weapon, and one count of first-degree property damage. The investigation remains ongoing.
As this family recovers from physical and emotional trauma, the case stands as a stark reminder of the work still needed to ensure that all Americans — regardless of race, background, or circumstance — can travel their own streets without fear. Roadways should not be battlegrounds, and prenatal appointments should not become scenes of gun violence.
For communities demanding justice and safety, this case reinforces a painful but urgent truth: protecting families requires both accountability for violent acts and a renewed commitment to policies that put human life first.
