A Memorial Day weekend dispute in Montgomery County, Texas, escalated into a frightening scene of gunfire that left a teenager injured and a neighborhood on edge. Authorities say 60-year-old Juan Ayala Montero was taken into custody after allegedly firing multiple rounds toward homes in the Kings Colony community, prompting a significant law enforcement response and a SWAT team standoff.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived to find Ayala armed with a long gun and reportedly shooting in the direction of residents. He later retreated into his home and barricaded himself inside as officers secured the area. The confrontation ended when SWAT officers arrived and Ayala surrendered without further violence.
Investigators say they recovered approximately 31 shell casings at the scene, with evidence indicating that several rounds were fired toward occupied homes. In addition to his immigration history, Ayala has a prior conviction for attempted homicide and criminal trespass in the United States. ICE officials credited the local sheriff’s office participation in the federal 287(g) program — which allows certain local officers to collaborate with federal immigration enforcement — with quickly identifying his immigration status and securing the detainer.
ICE officials argued that partnerships between local law enforcement and federal immigration agencies provide “another tool” to prevent the release of people accused of serious crimes.
