Ex‑IRS Agent Gets Life for Calculated Double Murder to Hide Affair

A Calculated Betrayal Ends in Life Sentence as Judge Denounces ‘Evil’ Double Murder Plot

A Virginia man convicted of orchestrating the murders of his wife and another man in an attempt to conceal an affair with the family’s au pair will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole. On Friday, a judge handed down the sentence, condemning the calculated violence and abuse of power that devastated two families and left a community shaken.

Brendan Banfield, a former IRS criminal investigator, was found guilty earlier this year on two counts of aggravated murder, as well as charges related to the use of a firearm during a felony and child endangerment. Prosecutors proved that in February 2023, Banfield engineered the killings of his wife, Christine Banfield, and Joseph Ryan inside the family’s home in Herndon, Virginia. Authorities said the motive was chillingly self-serving: to disguise his extramarital relationship with the family’s Brazilian au pair.

The au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, pleaded guilty to manslaughter for her role in the cover-up and received a 10-year prison sentence.

In handing down the life sentence, Judge Penney Azcarate did not mince words.

“The level of cruelty, calculation and inhumanity in this case reflects something far deeper than anger or impulse – it reflects evil,” she said, explaining that she felt no hesitation in imposing a life sentence.

Despite the jury’s verdict, Banfield addressed the court defiantly, insisting he was not responsible for his wife’s death. He described Christine as a devoted mother, wife, and nurse but maintained he did not stab her and claimed he was disappointed in the legal system. He also argued that investigators failed to adequately scrutinize Joseph Ryan.

But for the families left behind, the facts presented at trial told a starkly different story — one of manipulation, domination, and a disturbing willingness to sacrifice human lives to maintain control.

Christine Banfield’s sister, Danielle, offered a searing statement in court, asserting that Banfield could have chosen divorce rather than violence.

“Divorce would have required relinquishing control,” she said. “His actions were not driven by love, but by a desire for power, deception and a complete disregard for the lives he destroyed.”

Joseph Ryan’s mother, Deirdre Fisher, also confronted the man convicted of killing her son.

“Joe wasn’t disposable,” she said. “He had a face, a name, and a life. Brendan Banfield treated him as though he didn’t matter.”

Throughout the trial, prosecutors detailed what they described as an elaborate and deeply disturbing plan. Evidence showed that Banfield and Magalhães allegedly posed as Christine online, contacting Ryan through a fetish website and inviting him to the home under false pretenses. Authorities argued the plan was designed to stage Christine’s killing as the result of a violent home invasion.

Testimony revealed that on the night of the murders, the couple’s young child was taken to the basement while Ryan was fatally shot and Christine was stabbed with a knife Ryan had brought to the house. Prosecutors said Banfield then staged the scene to resemble a break-in, and Magalhães called 911 claiming an intruder had attacked Christine.

The judge underscored the gravity of the crimes, pointing to what she described as deliberate, self-serving choices that showed a profound disregard for human life.

“You do not deserve anything other than incarceration and a life of reflection on what you have done to the victims and their families,” Judge Azcarate said. “May it weigh heavily on your soul.”

The case stands as a devastating reminder of how power — particularly within intimate relationships — can be weaponized with catastrophic consequences. Two lives were stolen, families were torn apart, and a child was left without his mother, all in service of deception and control. Now, the man found responsible will face the lasting consequences of that violence, confined to a prison cell instead of the home where justice was so tragically betrayed.
